FINAL WHISTLE UPDATES:

DStv Premiership 2020/2021, MATCHDAY 1

Kaizer Chiefs                           0

Mamelodi Sundowns            3

(P. Shalulile 37, K. Erasmus 54, T. Zwane 89[P])

Mamelodi Sundowns started their title defense with a bang, as they overwhelmed Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 courtesty of goals either side of the half. Sundowns took advantage of some uncharacteristic goalkeeping from Itumeleng Khune who failed to collect a corner kick that he had come out for, with Peter Shalulile nodding into an empty net.

After having gone into the break at 1-0, Downs then ramped up their attack and a counter-attack led to a goal for Kermit Eramus after good work from PSL Player of the Season Themba Zwane. The rout was complete when Khune tripped former Chiefs star George Maluleka in the box, with Zwane converting the resultant spot-kick.

Man of the Match: Andile Jali (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Baroka                                          2

(R.Mbulu 10, N.Mgaga 57)

Maritzburg United                      1

(J. Meza 85)

Bakgakga started the match as the dominant side and Richard Mbulu tapped in the first goal of the DStv Premiership season after a great run on the left wing by Namibia midfielder Ananias Gebhardt. Baroka goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze was largely to thank for preserving the Limpopo side's lead after making numerous saves to deny the probing United, who were dominant at the start of the second half.

Baroka then doubled their lead against the run of play through a grass cutter from Richard Mbulu. United continued to attack and got a consolation goal from new signing Jose Ali Meza.

Cape Town City                          1

(M. Mdantsane 22)

Chippa United                            1

(A. Kwem 53)

The Citizen started brightly and managed to open up the Chilli Boys with a swift move that led to a cool Mduduzi Mdantsane finish in the six yard box. However, City seemed to relax afer that, allowing Chippa back into the game.

The 2nd half subs for the EC side revived the teams attack and led to Augustine Kwem equaliziing midway through the second half. Both teams failed to test the opposition goalkeepers after that, leading to a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium

Man of the Match:  Ramasimong Maloisane (Chippa United)

Amazulu                                    1

(L.Majoro 33)

Orlando Pirates                        1

(G.Mhango 13[P])

Amazulu started the match brightly until a contentious penalty was awarded for Pirates after a foul that had been visiby committed just outside of the penalty area, which Mhango duly converted. Usuthu were then handed a lifeline when Fortune Makaringe's flailing arm caught ex-teammate Luvuyo Memela in the box. Lehlohonolo Majoro missed then had his penalty saved by scored the rebound to draw level.

Amazulu went on to have the better chances in the second half including a last minute free header by Luvuyo Memela that was saved by Wayne Sandilands, to give both sides a share of the spoils.

Man of the Match: Ben Motshwari (Orlando Pirates)

SuperSport United                2

(B. Grobler 25, 90+5)

Black Leopards                      0

The Matsatsatsantsa claimed victory over a determined Lidoda Duvha after a weather delayed match at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Bradley Grobler grabbed the lead for United with a good finish inside the box following a precise Jamie Webber low cross. Leopards saw a lot of the ball but failed to breach the resolute United defence.

At the hour mark left-back Onismor Bhashera was given a red card for a studs up challenge on Roggert Nyundu. The Tshwane-outfit managed to defend well despite the numerical advantage and were awarded for their resilience with an injury time strike by Bradley Grobler to secure the three points.

Man of the Match: Bradley Grobler (SuperSport United)
