Bafana Bafana lost 2-1 against Zambia in an International friendly at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday afternoon despite having taken the lead midway through the second half.
South Africa head coach Molefi Ntseki emphasised before the game that these two friendly matches were to "specifically prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Cameroon 2021 back to back qualifiers against São Tomé and Príncipe" on 13th and 17th November.
Bafana Bafana fielded a completely changed starting XI from the midweek draw against Namibia but their game plan was derailed as early as the 10th second of the game after Lyle Foster was injured during an aerial battle, which led to him being replaced by Keegan Dolly.
The Zambian side, led by former Orlando Pirates head coach Michu Sredijevic, started off as the stronger side, but were let down by their decision making in the final third, as well as some resilient defending from Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mojeka Madisha. Percy Tau threatened later on in the first half but was often left isolated as the two teams went into the break at 0-0.
Both sides come out looking to attack in the second half and South Africa were duly rewarded with a 66th minute goal from Montpelier midfielder Keegan Dolly, following an assist from Anderlecht's Percy Tau.
However, the Zambians fought to pull a goal back in the 78th minute through Nkana FC midfielder Kelvin Kampamba, which seemed to unsettle the Bafana defence, before Lumwana Resident FC midfielder Chaniza Zulu latched onto SuperSport United forward Ghampani Lungu’s scuffed shot, to score what was the eventually winner for the Chipolopolo.
The 2-1 loss condemned coach Molefi Ntseki to his second loss after five games at the helm of Bafana Bafana following Stuart Baxter's resignation from the South African national team. Ntseki has won two and drawn his other game in charge of Bafana.
Midfielder Cole Alexander has decided to join Stuart Baxter at Odisha FC.
