VAR: BAXTER APOLOGISES FOR CONTROVERSIAL GBV-RELATED COMMENT

Wednesday, 3 February, 2021

Stuart Baxter has issued a video to Volley.co.za where the former Bafana Bafana head coach has apologised to the football fraternity for what he says was an "insensitive and stupid" post-match comment for Odisha FC,  which led to his dismissal at the Indian Super League club on Monday.

The former SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs mentor sparked outrage in India for his comment after his team's 1-0 defeat to Jamshedpur FC on Monday.

“You need decisions to go your way and they didn’t‚” said a visibly frustrated Baxter, with Odisha languishing in last position on the Indian Super League, having failed to get a victory in their last five league matches.

“I don’t know when we’re going to get a penalty. I think one of my players would have to rape someone or get raped himself if he was going to get a penalty,” he added.

The Indian club then released a statement on their Twitter on Monday night  stating that "We‚ at Odisha FC‚ unreservedly apologise and the club management will handle this matter internally,” before parting ways with the 67-year-old Englishman on Tuesday morning.
