CRUNCH TIME FOR TITLE CHASERS!

Wednesday, 2 September, 2020

Amakhosi go into the final two games of the Premiership season with one objective in mind, to reclaim the League title and give the fans their first trophy in five seasons in all competition.

Kazier Chiefs currently sit at the summit of the PSL table on 53 points tied with Mamelodi Sundowns on points but ahead on a superior goal difference with only two more league fixtures to go. Kaizer Chiefs face Chippa United and a Baroka who helped thwart their title rivals threat with a shock 1-0 victory on Sunday after Chiefs had handed the advantage to Mamelodi Sundowns after succumbing to a last minute equaliser from Bidvest Wits forward Eva Nga.

Not only did the defeat halt Chiefs title aspirations, but it put one of Mzansi's oldest clubs, Bidvest Wits, into the title race. The CleverBoys are currently on 49 points and are also two games away from completing their final season in the Premiership, after having sold it's PSL status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzhivhandila.

Of the three title chasers, Wits are the only team who are yet to lose a league game since football resumed in South Africa, but have been plagued with four draws in six league games since resumption, with two league wins, which has tainted their title aspirations. Their only loss has come in the Nedbank Cup via a 3-2 loss to rival title chasers Mamelodi Sundowns. They will face a wounded Black Leopards, who lost to fellow strugglers Amazulu recently, in their bid to avoid relegation or the Play-Offs at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if Gavin Hunt can outwit one of the clubs he previously managed once again.

Mamelodi Sundowns , who failed to capitilize on Chiefs loss to Wits on Sunday, by losing their own clash to Baroka 1-0, have been rather unconvincing since the restart, only managing eight league points from seven league fixtures (21 points) since football resumed with only two wins, three draws and three losses during that time. Next up for Mamelodi Sundowns is bottom of the table Polokwane City, who almost shocked table toppers Kaizer Chiefs recently in a 3-2 loss.

A win for either Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs will immediately remove Bidvest Wits from the title race, so some neutrals, and the CleverBoys faithful, will be hoping for some fortune in order to sign off from PSL football with a second Premership title under Gavin Hunt, who would become the most succesful coach of the PSL era with a career total of five PSL titles.

Kaizer Chiefs will be without goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi for the rest of the season, after he suffered a concussion during the loss to Bidvest Wits. Bruce Bvuma took his place recently and it will be interesting to see who plays in goal for Amakhosi's title deciding run with Itumeleng Khune and Brylon Petersen also available for selection. Title challengers Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits go into the final two games with new injuries and suspensions.
