van Wyk (far left) looks on ahead of a ABSA Premiership clash

This Time Last Year:

On 24 September 2019, Amazulu controversially lost 2-0 to Kaizer Chiefs at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi after having two goals disallowed by Kimberley-born assisant referee Mervyn Van Wyk.

SAFA's review committee studied the footage of the two incidents and it was decided that the young official should be acquitted of the first one as he made the correct decision in ruling the first goal offside.

According to head of referees Tenda Masikhwa, Van Wyk was only found guilty on one incident, which was the second goal where he thought the ball would be played by another Usuthu player. Mervyn Van Wyk was suspended for four weeks and was assigned a technical instructor to help him address his shortcomings.
